There are a number of different types of technologies that can be deployed to give dual verification. Technologies that can be implemented go from barcode and magnetic stripe through to smart chip cards that can be contactless and/or contact.  The use of dual verification technology opens up the card to be used for various functions, many of which can be implemented on a single card. 

Printing a barcode or encoding a magnetic stripe card with information allows this to be read by a compatible reader. Data that is held in this way is unsecure and can be read openly, but is easy to instigate within almost all apllications. When smart card technololgy is used you acquire a secure area to hold information and an encrypted channel of communication between the card and reader. This gives the ability to write information to the card as well as allowing the card to be used for secure logon for computers, cashless vending and other such bi-directional systems. All of the technologies can be used for read only applications such as access control, library systems, membership loyalty schemes and other systems. The functionality of these technology cards is enhanced when used in conbination with the photo identity card.
